Peer Pressure already?

James was so excited when I brought home a particular shirt from the semi-annual consignment event. It was red with lizards driving off-road vehicles. It was his favorite shirt and he wore it every chance he got, showing it off to friends and strangers.

He has finally taken an interest in picking his own clothes. If I let him, he'd wear shorts and sandals every day, so I have to hide them when it is cold or rainy. I am in the habit of laying out clothes for the kids in the morning to speed things up, especially because it often takes James forever to get dressed. Lately, however, James chooses a different shirt than what I've laid out for him (so maybe I won't have to do it anymore).

The other day, I laid out his favorite shirt and I was shocked he chose a different one. I thought it was just because he now wants to make his own decision on what to wear and wouldn't wear what Mom picked out. But Rex said he told him that he didn't like it anymore and Rex thought someone made fun of him wearing it. Sure enough, when I asked James about it, he said that a boy at school said it was stupid or something so James didn't like it anymore. I reminded him about the story we read called Stephanie's ponytail; everyone said she looked ugly in the ponytail she wore but she said she liked it anyway and the other kids decided to copy her. Maybe the boy was jealous of James' shirt and so he said something mean. But even if that wasn't the case, we told him that it doesn't matter if some other kid doesn't like it; if James likes it, then it's cool. Of course this didn't convince him and I was sad that he already has to deal with peer pressure.

Since when did Kindergarteners care about fashion? And especially little boys!
