The party turned out to be the easiest to plan for and the least chaotic, and, therefore, the best kid-party I've thrown so far. It was basically a water party in the backyard. I filled the little wading pool. I filled about 200 water balloons for some basic games that were a bit over the head of all the little ones, but they loved it anyway. We put down a plastic sheet and turned on the sprinklers for a slip-and-slide which was a great hit. Of course we had the stand-by trampoline and sandbox (in which you had to be dry to enter). The adults sat in chairs in the shade while the kids whooped and hollered and had a blast. I wish I could have all the birthday parties out back because it sure cut down on the chaos from the screaming and up-and-down stairs and in-and-out the back door.
I bought some Luau decorations and got some more supplies from freecycle. (I've carried on the tradition well, Mom: it can't be a party or a holiday without decorations! Amazing how important it is to the kids.) We had lemonade and I made Mom's famous Banana Split Cold Dessert (which the kids don't like, but all the adults just love) and chocolate cookies and cupcakes. Grandma Roberts brought her cool pineapple boats that were such a hit with our kids the last time we ate at their house.
Like last year, Megan was on Cloud Nine to have the day dedicated to her. She loved all the gifts she got. We even inherited the neighbor girl's bicycle with training wheels. (I think Megan likes getting hand-me-downs better than brand new things, as if the previous owner gifted it to her specifically with her in mind.)
We went to McDonalds for dinner after the party for an extra bonus. Eating out for birthdays is a tradition so we kinda had to.
