They are already calling this "Ice Storm 2007" and it's not even over yet. It doesn't seem as bad as the last one a month ago, but they say the worst is still yet to come. The freezing rain started yesterday and everything shut down. The governor of OK even declared it a state of emergency. Like Y2K, everyone rushed to the stores and wiped out everything yesterday. We were almost out of milk, so Rex went to the store to pick some up, and granted it is the weekend before the semester starts, but the place was a madhouse and the shelves were all but empty. He said everyone's carts were full of things like candles and flashlights and water. I'm shocked everyone ran to the store like it was the end of the world. But Rex says most people don't have more than a few days' worth of food in their homes. That's hard for me to believe. I mean, I understand not having a lot of perishable items like milk and produce. But water and canned foods? Even if we didn't have a food storage, our pantry alone would have more than a week's worth of food stocked!
We've been warned of power outages due to heavy ice posing a threat of collapsing power lines. James is having a hard time understanding that the white he sees outside is not snow but ice and you can't play with it. Oklahoma doesn't get snow; it gets ice. It is supposed stay below 25 degrees (lows around 4 and 5 degrees) for the next week, but no snow is predicted. We hope the outages don't happen because that would be awfully uncomfortable. And we are already going out of our minds with cabin fever and the 3-day weekend has only just begun. If anything had been opened, Rex would have driven us to the library or Barnes and Noble or somewhere; the kids need out of the house and we need out just as badly!
