Unable to do this project by myself, Rex, Will, and I tackled this project together a couple days before Christmas. This was my Christmas present: a new kitchen wall. The leak under the sink that I'd been catching with a bowl for the last couple months required complete replacement of the faucet. We took off the cabinets, removed the counter top, replaced the faucet, tore out a huge chunk of wall, put up the drywall, put the counter and cabinets back up, and then textured and painted.
BEFORE:

The part that isn't tiled has some sort of industrial strength glue and/or tile adhesive/cement or joint compound over a mesh patch.

(Can you see the switch for the garbage disposal hidden in between these tiles?)
AFTER:

Now I just want to put up a mirror over the sink and we'll be all done.

Good job, you guys! It looks great. I love mirrors above my sink. Right now though, there's a bar in front of my sink so it looks into the living room. Maybe I'll get to have another mirror later.
