I came across this article online called Why "I'm a Mormon"? It made me feel a lot better about the whole campaign. Maybe it doesn't come across as trying to prove we're not mutants. Maybe it doesn't feel to others like we are selling our religion. I don't know. This article did a great job explaining that many people today have never heard of Mormons or don't know anything at all about them. I still stand by what I said previously. But maybe it's not as weird as I thought.
However, I did find out that prior to the "I'm a Mormon" campaign, there was an identical "I'm a Scientologist" campaign. If you watch some of their videos, they are almost exactly the same. In fact, if you took out the "I'm a Mormon" or "I'm a Scientologist" at the end, you wouldn't know which was which!
