Moonstruck

Recently, there was a lot of hype about a Supermoon.  Apparently, every year, the nearest orbit of the earth will give rise to a 'supermoon' that appears 14% larger and 30% brighter than other full moons.  Somehow, I'd never heard of this phenomenon before.  Maybe it was only brought to my attention because of my Young Astronomer.  But suddenly, I was flooded with the memory of one of the most romantic nights of my life.

July 1999
Among the many fun and amazing things to do in San Diego, I wanted to share with Rex the Observatory on Mount Palomar.  I hadn't been there in years, but I thought it would be great to go with him now that I lived in North County.  We drove up the winding mountain road at sunset after work, but when we reached the observatory, it was closed to the public!  Well, duh!  It was in use at night.  I felt stupid for having dragged us all the way up there.  And for what?

Rex pulled the truck over and made me get out.  He said we were going for a walk.

What?  I'm a city girl!  We were on a lonely mountain road and there weren't any lights!  The only time that happens is when I'm camping.  He took my hand and we started walking.  I was getting tense, especially when I heard rustling in the shrubbery.  But Rex would keep me safe, right?  So I started to relax and looked up at the stars.

And then I beheld the most beautiful sight: the moon rise.  It was unbelievable the enormity of the moon!  It was giant!  And the stars started to disappear as its lunar brightness outshone the little dots in the sky.  Who needed city lights?  This was so bright, you could read by it!

In the years that followed that night, I figured the moon was bigger than life in my memory only because I was so twitterpaited that everything was bigger than life then.  Even if that moon wasn't really as big as in Joe Versus the Volcano, that's the image that remains in my head, and that's how I'd like to remember it always.  Now that I learned about a "supermoon," maybe my eyes weren't as deceived as I thought.  (And it's just another reason why the "George Lassos the Moon" scene in It's a Wonderful Life means so much to me.)

That was an amazing night, and the moon was huge. Just like your picture.
