Newlywed Mistakes: Learning to Cook

Disclaimer: Rex said if I was going to write his favorite stories, I needed to include this one because it is 2nd on his list of favorites.

When we got married, neither of us really knew how to cook.  I could make a couple of rice dishes and soon discovered he hated rice -- that about wiped out my family's recipes.  I could also make tacos, spaghetti with jar sauce, baked potatoes or mashed potatoes,  and pork chops.

Cooking, I soon discovered, was a learning experience.  But there really wasn't much point, because soon after we got married, Rex's work schedule changed and we didn't have dinner together unless I brought it to work and ate in the break room with him (which I did occasionally).  He worked 10am - 7pm and his days off were Sunday and Wednesday -- and his job at church was working with the 12 to 14 year old boys on Wednesday nights.  That didn't match my 8-5 M-F schedule very well. I know it could have been worse, but I didn't have much motivation to cook.

Since Rex wasn't working on Wednesdays, he had time to cook dinner before I got home.  He decided to surprise me by honoring my German heritage with ethnic cuisine: sausage and sauerkraut.  Little did he know that the only German food I liked was German potato salad.

When Rex's unsuspecting new bride opened the front door, I'm sure his face fell and his pride bruised when the words he heard me say were:

"Yuck, what is that stench?"

Open mouth, insert foot.  The curse of tactlessness.
