Rex's Employment Placement
For all those who are aware that Rex was "displaced," he finally got notice of where he will be teaching next year. (All displaced teachers must be placed before any transfers, but because no one has transferred yet, the only openings are brand new schools or teachers that are not returning to teach in the district; the transfers are really people trading places but no one can move until the first one moves, like those little puzzles that you shift the pieces around without picking them up. Therefore, almost no schools at the transfer fair had any official openings, and the school Rex was aiming for can't hire him till the teacher he'd replace was officially transferred.) He doesn't know what grade level he'll be teaching, but the school is Carson Elementary, which is not Title I and mainly puts us out of the running for loan forgiveness, unless he hates it there and chooses to transfer again next year. Even so, for the Stafford loan, he'd have to start all over on the 5 years because it has to be consecutive. The Perkins loan could be completely forgiven after the next 4 years of teaching at a Title I school because it does not require the years to be consecutive. However, if Rex likes it at Carson, he wouldn't move. Despite the fact that Carson didn't actually pick him but was assigned by the district, we feel very blessed. We know nothing first hand about the school, but the Lord must be looking out for us because it is about 10 minutes down the road in the other direction, into the really nice neighborhood. By their test scores, it is a fabulous school. Furthermore, it was nice to see that they currently have 4 other male teachers at that school. But because they are not Title I, teachers have to provide their own supplies and they do not have the math, reading, science, etc. specialists that are granted to the poorer schools. Rex said he thinks that they do a lot of team-teaching, and that's a bonus for him if he'd get to teach math/science.
