Ridding the Kitchen of Fruit Flies

Anyone's kitchen infested by fruit flies? I found the solution:

Make a cone out of paper and stick it in a jar for a funnel with a tiny opening. Put some fruit at the bottom of the jar and leave it on the counter (after you've scrubbed the kitchen and put all edibles in the fridge/pantry). The fruit flies are attracted to the food in the jar and can't figure out how to escape. I would catch them that way and then let them go outside and repeat. We had them in our pantry too so I did the same thing there. After a day or so, we were fly-free.

I know it sounds gross, but fly paper and trying to slap them between our hands wasn't working.
