Pumpkins and Jack-o-Lanterns

James had been asking to get pumpkins since the beginning of October. I held out till the second week and then bought three. He asked everyday to make them into jack-o-lanterns until I consented at the end of the third week when he’d brought home his small one from the pumpkin patch field trip. We carved 3 of the 4, saving the last to carve closer to Halloween. Sure enough, the pumpkins were rotten in 3 days. Is it just my imagination, or did jack-o-lanterns last longer when I was a kid? We got a great book at the library called Pumpkin Jack that helped James deal with throwing away the rotten pumpkins. And then we made a new jack-o-lantern while we waited to go to the Halloween party, and James named him Jack (from the book).

They have a Halloween Party at school this Tuesday and James will get to wear his costume. They also invited all the students to bring in a decorated (not carved) pumpkin to display in the library, so our FHE activity was to decorate two mini pumpkins so James could carry one to school with him.
